Tamahere has taken a significant step toward greener living with the introduction of a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station in the Tamahere Village parking lot.

Strategically located just a minute’s drive from the Waikato Expressway on- and off-ramps, this addition is not only a win for eco-friendly travelers, but also a testament to the area’s commitment to modern conveniences.

Tamahere Village, located on Wiremu Tamihana Drive, is more than just a place to charge. It is a place in itself, with cafes, shops, a pharmacy, a medical center and a supermarket. With playgrounds, a skateboard park, accessible public restrooms, and bike and pedestrian paths, drivers can enjoy a variety of activities while their cars are charging.

Councillor Crystal Beavis of the Tamar Woodlands Common Council emphasizes the importance of this development. “The EV charging station is another milestone in realizing a long-held vision of the Tamahere community working with the Council to build the true heart of Tamahere in line with the country’s lifestyle values,” says Tamahere Woodlands District General Councillor, Crystal Beavis.

The area is also home to the Waikato Tamahere District Council and a community space that offers a range of services, including free Wi-Fi, community meeting rooms and hot desks.

The opening of the Waikato Expressway in 2022 has made Tamahere an even more attractive destination for visitors. “The charging station further enhances Tamahere’s appeal by drawing people to our great local amenities and the famous Tamahere Village Market,” adds Councillor Beavis.

The new charging station is the result of a collaboration between Waikato District Council and ChargeNet. Located opposite the playground and skatepark, it has two 75 kW charging stations that provide four charging points.

This development not only enriches the Tamahere experience for locals and visitors alike, but also aligns with the growing trend of sustainable transportation, making Tamahere a model community for environmental initiatives.

The village of Tamahere is now home to a unique and long-awaited public facility; the newly opened Tamahere Village Toilets, unveiled just in time for the holiday season.

These are not just ordinary public toilets; they are the first in a series of charming cottage-like toilets that mark a significant change in the provision of public services in the Waikato area.

The official opening of the project, which is a joint effort between the community and council, was welcomed by Mayor Jacqui Church, council members Crystal Beavis, Eugene Patteson and Tilly Turner, and Tamahere Community Committee Chair Charles Fletcher.

These toilets stand out because they are the first from Modern Building Solutions’ new production line located in Ngaruawahia. The company is the first in the country to win a tender to supply public toilets in the Waikato district, breaking a long-standing duopoly in the provision of public toilets in New Zealand.

Te Kowhai Clear Property & Projects carried out the work on site, creating this modular, transportable and affordable solution. This initiative is a significant breakthrough for the Waikato District Council, offering a practical and cost-effective alternative to managing public services.

The Tamahere Community Committee, chaired by Charles Fletcher, played a key role in this achievement, emphasizing the power of community initiatives supported by local government.
